Negros Oriental, Philippines eases restrictions on pork products ahead of the holidays

Consumers in Negros Oriental, Philippines now have more options for Christmas hams and other pork products as restrictions related to African swine fever (ASF) have been eased.

Dr Alfonso Tundag, quarantine officer for the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) in Negros Oriental, announced that suppliers from ASF-affected areas can now deliver pork products to the province, provided they meet specific requirements.

"Incoming deliveries from ASF-infected areas are now allowed, but the supplier must first secure a certificate of acceptance from the Provincial Veterinary Office of Negros Oriental," Tundag stated.

Suppliers are also required to meet additional conditions or present specific documents from the point of origin. Shipments arriving without the necessary paperwork will be confiscated.

During the height of ASF restrictions, only one brand of Christmas ham, produced by Virginia Food Inc in Cebu, was permitted for entry into Negros Oriental. Cebu had been declared ASF-free at the time, ensuring the availability of limited pork products in the province.

Tundag noted that Governor Manuel "Chaco" Sagarbarria issued an executive order earlier this year to relax border control restrictions for live swine and pork by-product suppliers. The move is intended to reduce the impact of ASF on local businesses and guarantee a steady supply of pork products for consumers during the festive season.
