India reports growth in milk, egg, and meat production for 2023/24
Milk, egg, and meat production in India increased during 2023/24 compared to 2022/23, according to the Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics - 2024, released by India's Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh unveiled the report on November 26, 2024, highlighting significant growth across various sectors.
Milk production in India increased by 3.78%. India's milk production is estimated at 239.30 million tonnes for 2023/24, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 5.62% over the last decade. In 2014/15, the country produced 146.3 million tonnes of milk, and the figure stood at 230.58 million tonnes in 2022/23. India remains the world's largest milk producer.
Uttar Pradesh contributed 16.21% of the nation's milk production, securing its position as the top milk-producing state. Rajasthan followed with 14.51%, while Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra accounted for 8.91%, 7.65%, and 6.71%, respectively. West Bengal achieved the highest annual growth rate in milk production at 9.76%, followed by Jharkhand at 9.04%, Chhattisgarh at 8.62%, and Assam at 8.53%.
Egg production in the country was estimated at 142.77 billion eggs in 2023/24, marking a compound annual growth of 6.8% over the past decade. In 2014/15, egg production was recorded at 78.48 billion. The annual growth rate for 2023/24 over 2022/23 was 3.18%, with the latter producing 138.38 billion eggs. Andhra Pradesh led egg production with a 17.85% share, followed by Tamil Nadu (15.64%), Telangana (12.88%), West Bengal (11.37%), and Karnataka (6.63%).
Meat production, encompassing poultry, cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, and pig, was estimated at 10.25 million tonnes during 2023/24, representing a compound annual growth rate of 4.85% over the last decade. In 2014/15, production was 6.69 million tonnes. For 2023-24, meat production grew by 4.95% over 2022/23, when it stood at 9.77 million tonnes.
Of the total meat production, poultry accounted for 48.96%, buffalo for 18.09%, goat for 15.50%, sheep for 11.13%, cattle for 2.60%, and pig for 3.72%. West Bengal led meat production with a 12.62% share, followed by Uttar Pradesh (12.29%), Maharashtra (11.28%), Telangana (10.85%), and Andhra Pradesh (10.41%). Assam recorded the highest annual growth rate in meat production at 17.93%, followed by Uttarakhand at 15.63% and Chhattisgarh at 11.70%.
