Romania faces lowest corn production since 2015
Romania is on track to record its lowest corn production since 2015, with only 4.88 million tonnes harvested from 1.8 million hectares, representing 80% of the sown area, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
The average yield this year stands at 2.6 tonnes per hectare, a decline from last year's 3.2 tonnes per hectare, which was also the weakest maize production year since 2015.
By the same period in 2023, Romanian farmers had collected 8.5 million tonnes from 82.9% of the cultivated area. Current estimates suggest that based on the average yield so far, the total production for this year could reach approximately 5.9 million tonnes.
Romania has also experienced a significant drop in its standing among European exporters, with a decline of more than 76% in corn deliveries to third markets.
Official data for 2023 shows that Romania exported a total of 5.3 million tonnes of maize, generating EUR 1.5 billion (US$1.58 billion) in revenue.
