Egypt and Liberia forge partnership on aquaculture development

Egypt and Liberia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on developing their aquaculture sectors.

The agreement was formalised between the Egyptian Lake Protection and Fish Resources Development Authority (LPRDA) and Liberia's National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NFAA).

The MOU aims to promote sustainable development and economic integration within the fisheries sector. This initiative is part of Egypt's broader efforts to enhance partnerships across Africa, addressing shared challenges in peace, security, and economic development. Egyptian political leaders have also focused on issues such as counter-terrorism, conflict resolution, the economic impacts of global crises, climate change, and food security. These efforts align with Agenda 2063, the African Union's development plan.

The partnership focuses on key areas, including governance in the aquaculture sector, tackling illegal fishing practices, advancing aquaculture development, exchanging expertise, supporting scientific research, and increasing trade between Egypt and Liberia.

Hussein Farahat, executive director of the LPRDA, emphasised the significance of this collaboration. He highlighted the vital role of fisheries in Egypt's food security and sustainable development goals. He noted Egypt's extensive experience in managing lakes and fisheries and reaffirmed the country's commitment to promoting sustainable development across Africa. Farahat also pointed out Egypt's strategic location on the Mediterranean and Red Seas, which enhances its capabilities in fishing and aquaculture.

He reiterated Egypt's readiness to provide technical and logistical support to African nations. This includes offering training and consultations on sustainable resource management and assisting with fishing, aquaculture, and fish processing initiatives.

Emma Catherine Metieh, director general of the NFAA, expressed her satisfaction with the agreement. She highlighted its alignment with Liberia's "ARREST" development agenda, which prioritises agriculture and aquaculture. Metieh conveyed gratitude from Liberia's president to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and the Egyptian people. She also noted Liberia's commitment to attracting investment in aquaculture by fostering a favourable environment and offering incentives to investors.

The signing ceremony was attended by several Egyptian officials, including representatives from the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, and officials from the LPRDA. The Liberian delegation included representatives from the NFAA and the Liberian Embassy.

The LPRDA underscored that this collaboration reflects Egypt's dedication to African cooperation and sustainable development. It highlighted the agreement's potential to contribute to economic integration and improve living standards for citizens across the continent. The authority also stressed the importance of international cooperation in addressing shared challenges in the aquaculture sector.
