Spain tops in Europe in cutting antibiotic consumption in animals

Spain is currently recording a 69.5% reduction in antibiotic consumption in animals.

According to the country's acting Minister of Health, José Miñones, since the National Plan against Antibiotic Resistance (PRAN) began, Spain also leads among European nations in reducing the consumption of veterinary antibiotics.

The country's effort to control the use of antibiotic use was recently seen in the updating of an antimicrobial sales surveillance system to comply with a new European regulation on veterinary medicinal products. This development was highlighted by the director of the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS), María Jesús Lamas.

A cross-border working group between Spain, Portugal, France and Ireland was also created to improve the availability of antimicrobials and alternatives in the veterinary sector.
