Sri Lanka reports first ASF outbreak, restricts swine transport

Transportation of swine across Divisional Secretariats in Sri Lanka has been suspended after the country's first reported cases of African swine fever (ASF) at multiple local farms, News 1st reported.

The measure follows the deaths of nearly a thousand swine from the viral disease, with cases documented in all provinces except the northern province.

Dr Hemali Kothalawala, Director General of Sri Lanka's Department of Animal Production and Health, confirmed that an official gazette notification will soon formalise the restrictions on movement.

As a preventive step, unaffected animals have received vaccinations to help curb the spread of the disease. Dr Kothalawala urged the public to avoid consuming meat from swine that have succumbed to the virus, as a precaution against potential health risks.
