Kwara, Nigeria pledges continued investment in livestock sector infrastructure

The Governor of Kwara, Nigeria, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to investing in infrastructure and equipment in the livestock sector for the benefit of the state, Voice of Nigeria reported.

Governor AbdulRazaq made this statement during the opening ceremony of the third batch training workshop for 100 extension agents and farmers on small ruminant production and crop residue processing. The event also marked the launch of the distribution of crop residue crushers and pelleting machines to livestock farmers.

The workshop, organised by the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) Coordination Office and facilitated by Synergy Impact Consultant Limited and the Centre for Dryland Agriculture, Kano, was held at the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation (NCAM), Idofian, Kwara state.

Representing the governor, State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Oloruntoyosi Thomas, highlighted the challenges facing the livestock sector, including climate change, disease outbreaks, and limited access to resources and markets. She emphasised the importance of capacity-building initiatives to help overcome these challenges and unlock the potential of the sector in Kwara State.

Governor AbdulRazaq explained that the aim of his administration is to equip farmers to tackle the issues that hinder their progress by enhancing their livestock management skills.

He further noted that the state government's L-PRES project is part of a comprehensive initiative to enhance livestock capacities through training, education, and sustainable practices. This is designed to empower farmers with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in an ever-changing agricultural landscape.

The governor also expressed optimism that the training would increase livestock management knowledge across the state, enhance the efficiency of extension agents, and improve the livelihood and economic well-being of the populace.

Lead facilitator, Dr Akeem Ajeigbe, commended the governor for his support of the training initiative and encouraged the participants to use their newly acquired knowledge to address challenges in the livestock sector.
