Vietnam's AVAC to export 150,000 doses of ASF vaccine to the Philippines

AVAC Vietnam Joint Stock Company (AVAC) will export 150,000 doses of its African swine fever (ASF) vaccine to the Philippines on August 29, 2024, according to the company's general director, Nguyen Van Diep, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Diep reported that a Philippine delegation visited Vietnam on August 26 to inspect AVAC's vaccine production facilities in preparation for the export. The shipment is part of a larger order of 600,000 doses placed by the Philippine government.

To date, AVAC has supplied approximately 2.3 million doses of the ASF vaccine to the domestic market and exported a total of 305,000 doses, with 300,000 of those going to the Philippines and 5,000 to Nigeria.

AVAC is also in the process of registering its vaccine for circulation in other countries, including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Myanmar, and Nigeria.

In July 2023, the Philippines imported 300,000 doses of AVAC's ASF vaccine and conducted a three-phase evaluation on 30 large-scale farms, involving 150,000 pigs. The results showed that all vaccinated pigs were safe and protected. Following this successful evaluation, the Philippines approved the circulation of AVAC's ASF LIVE vaccine in July 2024.

Looking ahead, Diep mentioned that the World Organisation for Animal Health is expected to issue standards for ASF vaccines by May 2025. These standards will play a significant role in shaping the export opportunities for ASF vaccines globally, as countries will base their own standards on those set by the organisation.

Domestically, AVAC's ASF vaccine has been adopted by several large enterprises, including CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company, which has used over 1 million doses. Other companies, such as CJ Vina Agri and Japfa Comfeed Vietnam, are currently conducting trials, while small- and medium-sized enterprises are purchasing the vaccine through distributors.

Since July 2023, AVAC has supplied over 250,000 doses to livestock production divisions and agricultural service centres across various districts nationwide. Several provinces and cities, including Cao Bang, Lang Son, Bac Ninh, and Lai Chau, have used significant quantities of the vaccine.
