Development and trends in China's aquafeed market over past five years

Between 2020 and 2025, China's total aquafeed production exhibited a trend of "rise first, then decline."

After peaking in 2022 at 24.456 million tons, production fell by 4.7% to 23.503 million tons in 2023, and further contracted to 22.131 million tons in 2024. In the first half of 2025, there was a modest year-on-year increase of 0.31%, indicating the beginning of a bottoming-out phase.

Freshwater feed: Shrinking output and market share

In 2022, freshwater feed accounted for as much as 87.2% of total aquafeed production, but this fell to 86.9% in 2024. Freshwater feed production dropped from 21.33 million tons in 2022 to 19.23 million tons in 2024. The first half of 2025 saw only a marginal growth of 0.53%.

Both output and market share declined, mainly due to reduced production of freshwater fish feed. The contraction in the farming of the four major Chinese carp species—driven by labour shortages, rising pond and feed costs, and persistently low prices—has reduced the scale of freshwater aquaculture, thus affecting feed demand.
