The country's crop output experienced a decline in the second quarter of 2024, while poultry production saw an increase, according to the latest report from the Philippine Statistics Authority, The Manila Times reported.

Total crop harvest from April to June 2024 amounted to 15.56 million metric tonnes (MT), a decrease of 13% from the 17.88 million MT recorded during the same period last year. Corn yield decreased by 20.3% to 1.17 million MT.

Livestock production remained relatively stable in the same quarter, with a total output of 539,930 MT compared to 540,460 MT in the previous year. Swine output, which accounted for 78.3% of the total volume of livestock production, was at 422,060 MT, slightly down from last year's 422,720 MT. However, dairy production increased by 9.7% to 7,419 MT, up from 6,760 MT in the previous year.

Poultry production showed growth, rising by 8.7% to 739,720 MT from 680,500 MT recorded in the same period last year. Chicken production was the top contributor, with an annual growth of 8.9%, reaching 520,480 MT. The yield of chicken eggs also increased, climbing to 198,040 MT from 181,740 MT in the same period in 2023.

The country's Department of Agriculture highlighted that the latest production figures demonstrate resilience amidst the challenges faced by the industry, including El Nino and recent typhoons.

"The department's proactive approach aims to mitigate the impact of adverse weather conditions and strengthen the sector's capacity to rebound," stated Agriculture Assistant Secretary and spokesman Arnel de Mesa. He explained that support measures are designed to enhance productivity and help farmers sustain agricultural growth and stability despite external challenges.
