Three pig deaths from ASF reported in Hesse, Germany
A farmer in Hesse, Germany, reported the death of three pigs and the presence of other animals showing signs of African swine fever (ASF) to the state’s veterinary authority in July, according to the Hesse Ministry of Agriculture.
The affected farm near Stockstadt (Groß-Gerau district) has more than 1,100 pigs. Tests carried out by the state laboratory confirmed the outbreak.
An outbreak had already been detected at the start of July on a farm with nine pigs near Biebesheim am Rhein (Groß-Gerau district).
The first case of ASF in Hesse was detected in mid-June in a wild boar in the district of Groß-Gerau.
Since then, large-scale carcass examinations have been carried out in the region to define a so-called core activity zone and a restricted zone.
Electric fences along the core zone are intended to prevent the migration of infected or diseased animals to the outside.
Some 14,000 hectares have been searched by teams using special carcass detecting dogs and drones.
So far, 38 positive cases have been detected.
