The ranking and market structure of Chinese aquafeed producers in 2023

China currently has more than 1,600 aquafeed producers, with one-third of them having a total annual output of over 200,000 tonnes.

Last year, the combined output of the top 10 aquafeed producers in the country was 12,229,000 tonnes, accounting for 53% of China's total aquafeed production; the overall ranking of these industry players remained largely unchanged in 2023.

Haid Group, which has the highest aquafeed output among its peers, achieved a small growth rate of 0.64% in the year. Its output of freshwater aquafeed decreased by 0.43% year-on-year, of which freshwater fish feed dipped by 1.27%, whereas the production of other freshwater feeds expanded and seawater feed types increased by 8.14%.

Tongwei, the second-largest aquafeed producer, saw a slight production fall in 2023. Tongwei is the largest producer of feeds for traditional fish, with its output of freshwater fish feed accounting for more than 75% of its total aquafeed production.

Among the top 10 aquafeed producers, Dabeinong registered the biggest drop in output of more than 25%. Previously, the company produced 440,000 tonnes of aquatic products in 2022, accounting for less than 10% of its total output. In 2023, it produced a high proportion of freshwater fish feed, which decreased in output significantly, thus slashing Dabeinong's total output of aquafeed.

As the output of the top two market players was generally stable, the combined market share of the top 10 aquafeed producers remained at 53% in 2023. If the top two companies were not accounted for, the market share of those ranked between the third and twentieth spots could drop by 2%, hinting at the underlying pressure on the Chinese aquafeed industry last year despite the negligible change in the market structure.
