Selangor phases out 30 pig farms in Kuala Langat as royal directive ends licence renewals

Around 11,000 pigs are being removed in stages from Tanjung Sepat, with 87 affected farmers to receive state assistance.

Approximately 30 pig farms housing around 11,000 pigs in Tanjung Sepat, Kuala Langat, are being progressively wound down following a decision by the Sultan of Selangor to withhold consent for the renewal of pig farming licences in the area.

Izham Hashim, chairman of the Selangor state infrastructure and agriculture committee, said the removal of pigs is being carried out in stages, as the animals are not yet mature enough for slaughter or culling.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah first called for an end to pig farming in Selangor in February, citing environmental concerns including river pollution from farm waste and the state's demographic composition. He reaffirmed that position earlier this month.

The state government said it will assist the 87 affected pig farmers in transitioning to other industries once operations cease. A meeting scheduled for 9 June will identify support measures, including land rehabilitation assistance.
