A 2024 analysis of China's poultry feed market

EFL AG-DATA's preliminary estimates show that China's layer feed output in 2024 at 25.83 million tonnes, a drop of 1.49% from 2023.
The country's broiler feed output was 73.83 million tonnes, an increase of 2.09% from 2023.
Concerning layer feed output, the output of compound feed last year was 22.92 million tonnes, a drop of 2.11% from 2023. Layer feed concentrate output was 1.02 million tonnes, an increase of 1.96% from 2023. The output of layer premix was 1.88 million tonnes, an increase of 2.45% from 2023.
Since compound feed accounts for more than 88% of total layer feed output, the decline in compound feed production led to a reduction in the overall production of layer feed.
Last year, among the three major feed producers in China with an annual output of more than one million tonnes of layer feed, Haida Group increased its production by more than 3%. New Hope and Charoen Pokphand Group reduced their production by 15% and 5%, respectively.
Layer chicken feed accounts for more than two-thirds of the national layer feed output. While the overall output of layer chicken feed decreased in 2024, the inventory of layer chickens in China did not decline. Consumption-wise, only more than 35% was compound feed, over 5% was concentrate feed, and nearly 60% was premix feed. The overall consumption of layer chicken feed was higher last year than that in 2023.
In 2024, the total output of poultry feed was 72.75 million tonnes, an increase of 1.96% over 2023. The output of poultry feed concentrate was 0.60 million tonnes, an increase of 17.06% over 2023. The output of poultry premix was 0.48 million tonnes, an increase of 3.08% on-year.
Among the top poultry feed producers in China, New Hope Group's poultry feed production dropped by 3%. Haida Group's output increased by more than 7%, while that of Liyuan increased by more than 3%. Wen's, an integrated broiler company had a stagnated output. The poultry feed production of Lihua and Sunner increased by 7% and 5%, respectively.
For poultry feed production, broiler chicken feed accounts for more than two-thirds (last year, broiler chicken feed output increased).
In 2023, China's broiler chicken output totalled 131.80 million birds. Preliminary estimates show that in 2024, China's broiler output would have reached 134.37 million birds, boosting the consumption and production of broiler feeds.
