DNV buys over company focused on big-data solutions for aquaculture industry

DNV has announced the acquisition of AquaCloud, a company specialising in big-data solutions for the aquaculture sector.

The deal aims to establish a shared and secure data infrastructure that allows companies to use production data more effectively for insights, decision-making, and benchmarking. The move follows AquaCloud's recent bankruptcy and includes its intellectual property and technology.

"The aquaculture industry is facing increasingly complex biological and regulatory challenges, from changes in water temperature and algal blooms to jellyfish and disease," said Thomas Vogth-Eriksen, Director of Aquaculture and Ocean Health at DNV. "At the same time, new technology creates significant opportunities. To respond effectively, the industry needs a common, trusted foundation for sharing and using data, allowing decisions to be based on a broader and more representative knowledge base."

By accessing broad and representative data, companies can gain insight into key issues such as sea lice levels, fish wounds, and mortality causes, enabling more targeted interventions.

"For participants to benefit from improved insight, benchmarking, and cross-company learning, the data foundation must represent a substantial share of production," said Trude Steinbru Heggstad, Head of Digital and Innovation, Aquaculture and Ocean Health at DNV. "Our focus will therefore be on broad industry engagement, secure data sharing, and open dialogue, so that companies can participate with confidence and retain full control of their own data."

AquaCloud will operate under DNV's cloud platform, Veracity, which ensures secure handling of verified data. Veracity is already used by leading shipping companies for data management and regulatory reporting, covering over 11,000 vessels.

Mikkel Skou, Director of Veracity at DNV, said: "Shared data standards must be supported by an infrastructure that ensures quality, traceability, and long-term trust. Veracity provides this foundation, enabling secure data sharing while ensuring that data owners retain full control over how their data is used."

Vogth-Eriksen emphasised the potential for a digital ecosystem of industry data to optimize site management, enable smarter technology use, and improve transparency while supporting compliance with regulatory requirements. The acquisition aligns with DNV's ambition to enhance competitiveness, sustainability, and fish welfare across the aquaculture sector.
