Extension of Germany's origin meat labeling goes into effect

The extension of origin labeling of meat in Germany came into force on February 1.

It is now mandatory in Germany for points of sale to label the origin of fresh, chilled, or frozen pork, sheep, goat and poultry meat that is not packaged. Until now, the regulation only applied to unpackaged beef and packaged meat.

German Federal Minister Cem Özdemir said: "Customers can now make a conscious choice in favor of domestic products and thus support German livestock farming. "Made in Germany" is not only synonymous with quality but also with higher animal welfare and environmental standards compared to those in many other countries."

The EU Commission is currently considering extending mandatory origin labeling to other foods.
